Reading:
Reading nightly is the most important homework I will assign all year, so please do not skip it! The goal is to read for 20 minutes every night so your child will never have "no homework"
Math:
Most math work will be completed in class, however if there should be something we don't finish there might be work that comes home and is expected to return to school the next day.
The #1 way you can help your child with math at home is to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts! Flash cards, drills, and technology are all fun ways to help your child memorize basic math facts. As math gets harder knowing facts will help students move on to more complex concepts without using all their brain power tackling basic facts.
30 minute rule:
Worksheet homework in 3rd grade should not take your child longer than 30 minutes each night. Worksheet homework is sent home to help reinforce concepts we are learning in class, and to help your child practice responsibility. If your child has worked efficiently for 30 minutes trying his/her best and is reaching a level of frustration, please have your child stop the worksheet. Draw a line where your child finished and initial so that I know the homework was attempted. If your child is able to handle working for over 30 minutes, feel free to have your child do so as long as your child does not become discouraged, unmotivated, or upset. Homework time is not meant to be a difficult or exhausting experience for your child or your family.
